Our History

The Sierra Leone Airports Authority was established by Act No.8 of 1988 as an autonomous and self-sustaining entity with a clear mandate to manage both the Freetown International Airport and the Hastings Airfield.

The organization is not entitled to any subvention from Government but has the authority to levy charges on users of airport facilities and services to generate revenue to finance airport safety and securityincluding payment of staff over heads and provision and maintenance of essential airport infrastructure and equipment.

The Authority is also charged with the responsibility of coordinating overall airport activities to guaranteethe security, safety and comfort of passengers and to optimize service delivery to meet the expectations of Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Airlines, ICAO and the air travelling public.

The Remodeling of SLAA

In 2020, the Government of Sierra Leone signed a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract for theconstruction of a new airport terminal and related facilities at the Freetown International.  The contractors SUMMA Group is a Turkish Company that won the contract through a competitive bidding process with varied experience in the construction, management and operation of airport related projects. The BOT agreement called for a decoupling process for Summa Group to manage the operation of Freetown International Airport limiting SLAA to provide Air Navigational Services and Airport Operational Compliance functions as stipulated for in the agreement. The Authority have proudly delivered on this promise. Today, our organizational culture is framed on: making air navigational services safer andsmarter; delivering benefits through technology and infrastructure; and promoting Just culture.

Our Mandate

The Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA) as a public service organization statutorily charged with the responsibility of managing the Freetown International Airport, Hastings Airports and all other Airports in Sierra Leone and provide service to both passenger and cargo airlines.

Optimum human and material resources; and provide services to the community within the frame work of national development objectives.

Our Vision

To transform Freetown International Airport to a regional hub, facilitate the transshipment of Cargo and passengers thereby rendering Freetown International Airport an attractive destination of choice for all Passengers worldwide.

Business Policies

The Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA) performs its statutory duties, according to the policyguidelines provided by the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Transport and Aviation.The Authority is guided by these in all of its business dealings and agreements with contractors andvarious third parties with which it does business. SLAA welcomes the private sector to partner with it invarious areas of its statutory mandate to provide adequate infrastructure and facilities and service deliveryto support the aviation industry in Sierra Leone.

Corporate Governance

SLAA shall observe business policies that are in conformity with the policies of the Government of Sierra Leone as regards contracts and business agreements. It shall observe appropriate due process practices in line with government policies which are also in conformity with global best practices in the international aviation industry.

All its business and service agreements are transparent and follow established government policies.

He assess, evaluate, coordinate and oversee the daily operations at the Freetown International Airport. He is also a principal adviser on safety and security issues to Management.

He collaborate with Management to prepare the annual capital and operating budgets. He also implement cost and internal control measures to safeguard resources of the Institution.

He facilitates financial and operational audits. He also identify audit risks, and coordinate with management and audit team in preparing related reports for the attention of the Board of Directors.
